چکیده

Laproscopy was used in 400 ewes from 3 commercial flocks to study the difference in fertility of ewes mated in the first vs. second 2 weeks of the joining period. Examination of the ovaries of the ewes at joining and 14 days after joining revealed that 23% of the ewes did not experience a 'quiet ovulation' at the beginning of their breeding season but ovulated and displayed oestrus simultaneously both for the first time after the introduction of rams. The percentage of these ewes failing to lamb was significantly higher than for the remaining ewes mated in the first 2 weeks of joining (66% vs. 38%; P < O.Ol>, or for those ewes experiencing a 'quiet ovulation' in the first 2 weeks and a normal ovulation plus oestrus in the second 2 weeks of joining (66% vs. 36%; P < 0.01). The proportion of ewes of this type, mated in the first 2 weeks of joining was sufficient to cause an 8'/o difference in ewes failing to lamb between ewes mated for the first time in the first vs. second 2 weeks of joining. The low fertility of these ewes strongly suggests that a prior progestational phase is necessary for reasonable fertility at the beginning of the breeding season.

Synchrony of ovulation and follicular dynamics in merino ewes treated with GnRH in the breeding and non-breeding seasons.

The effect of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) treatment on the time of ovulation and the occurrence of follicular dominance during the non-breeding and breeding seasons (experiment 1), and on fertility after artificial insemination (AI) in the non-breeding season (experiment 2), was examined in Merino ewes. Oestrus was synchronized in 40 nulliparous ewes (experiment 1; n = 20, in the non-...

Ewe Genotype Effects on Seasonality of Oestrus and Ovulation in South-western Victoria

Two experiments, one examining oestrus and ovarian activity in 5 genotypes of young ewes exposed continuously to teaser rams and the other examining the onset of the breeding season in 4 separate strains of young Merino ewes, were carried out at Hamilton. In each experiment there were genetic differences in the duration of the non-breeding season. In experiment 1, Merinos and Comebacks had a sh...

The Stimulation of Fertile Oestrus following Spring Lambing in Machine Milked Border Leicester X Merino Ewes

Groups of adult lactating Border Leicester cross Merino ewes which had lambed in the spring and had been milked mechanically after the lambs had been weaned at birth, were joined with Dorset Horn rams approximately 60 days after parturition. The ewes had been treated with progestogen sponges and pregnant mare’s serum gonadotrophrin (750 and 1500 I.U.) prior to the time of first or second expect...

Stimulation of Ovulation in Seasonally or Lactationally Anovular Ewes by Rams

If preconditioned by a period of isolation from rams during the non-breeding season, ewes of many breeds respond to the reintroduction of rams (teasing) by displaying a relatively synchronised oestrus, approximately one oestrous cycle later (Merino: Schinckel 1954a; Awassi: Eyal 1958; Romney: Edgar and Bilkey 1963; Merinos d'Arles: Prud'hon et al. 1966). The oestrous activity of the flock is sp...

Oestradiol levels in sheep plasma during the oestrous cycle.

The concentration of oestradiol was measured by radioimmunoassay in ovarian venous plasma collected from ewes of three breeds (Finnish Landrace, Scottish Blackface and Tasmanian Merino) on Day 9 of the oestrous cycle and in jugular venous plasma collected daily around oestrus in two of these breeds. The mean +/- s.e.m. concentration in the ovarian venous plasma of the Merino (44.1 +/- 7.6 pg/ml...
